Peter began playing golf at the age of 15. When the teachers at his school challenged the pupils to a game of golf, Peter was asked to play. Anything to beat the teachers!! It was Pat Mooney, a teacher at The Abbey CBS in Newry who spotted that Peter had a flair for golf as well as football. The following year Peter's parents, Kathleen and Maurice, took over as stewart and stewardess of Warrenpoint Golf Club in County Down and for a year Peter lived on the golf course.

His first handicap was 22 and when he played in his first competition (the Ulster U-18 Boys Championship) he shot 77 in the qualifying round and was cut to an 8 handicap. Within 6 months Peter was playing off scratch, winning youth tournaments and representing his country an youth level. When he finished school, Peter went to Manchester to study art & design. On completition of a foundation course, Peter decided that this was not for him so he returned to Ireland in 1976. Although he had not played golf at college a few club members at Warrenpoint persuaded him to turn professional, so with financial help from his parents and a few members, Peter turned professional and went to South Africa in 1978. Playing in those days was so different. You had to bring your own practise balls to tournaments and the purses were low, so after some thought Peter decided to join the PGA and became assistant to Norman Drew at Malone Golf Club in Belfast. Norman and Peter became great friends and although Norman is retired they often meet and talk. Peter still learns a lot from Norman, not just about golf but also about life in general.

Peter continued to play in Ireland and had success in numerous Pro ams, however he always yearned to play in the larger events. He was U-23 Irish Champion 2 years running and was Irish Assistants Champion in 1979. His full time PGA career took him to some of the major golf clubs in Ireland as Head Professional and Golf Director. When he left his position as PGA Golf Professional at The K Club just before the 2006 Ryder Cup, he quickly go into winning ways by becoming Irish Club Professional Champion in 2006. After a trip to the Champions Tour Q School Peter played in a number of qualifying events with mixed success, but gaining experience with each event.

In 2007 Peter finished 11th in the Irish Senior Open and was beaten in a playoff at the final qualifying for both the US Senior Open and the Senior British Open.

In 2008 he finished runner up in The Texas Senior Open, beaten into 2nd place by one shot. From a field of 128 players, only 3 broke par for the event and peter was the only player to break par in every round, scoring -4 for the event.

So far this year Peter has performed well, finishing 9th in the British Senior Club Professionals' Championship and has already qualified for the British Senior PGA. With more qualifying to come for the US Senior Open and the Senior British Open, there is a lot of golf still to be played.
